When you are using the quadratic formula you are solving for the x intercepts. The answers that you come up with are called roots, there may be 2 answers , 1 answer .. or non real answers. The x intercpets represent where the parabola crosses the orgin of your graph. If you recieve 2 roots you will have 2 points that cross the orgin. If you have one root, you will have only one point that crosses the orign and if you have no roots than there will be no points that cross the orgin of your graph.
